Victoria ISD has been approved to pilot Summer Meal Distribution for Rural Areas program.
Starting June 1, 2023, Aloe Elementary will be the feeding site for this program. The VISD Child Nutrition Department will be distributing free breakfast and lunches to all children 18 years old and younger.
“Much like we did with the pandemic meal distribution, parents will need to provide a birth certificate, student ID, current report card or the child(ren) may be present,” said Dana Bigham, Director of Child Nutrition in VISD. “We will then give them a “dashboard placard” to make future meal distribution faster and easier.”
Free meals will be distributed at Aloe Elementary on Monday and Thursday of each week from 4 to 6 p.m. On Monday, children will receive meals for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. The Thursday distribution will cover Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
Over 65% of the student population is economically disadvantaged, participating in piloting the rural summer feeding program will help many of the district's students and families to have more nutritional and dietary stability during the summer months when schools are routinely closed.
